Did you know that at least 1 in 4 people killed by police suffer from untreated serious mental illness?
My name is Omarr and I am a Registered Nurse and a mental health advocate. My background is in mental and behavioral health and I currently work in an acute inpatient psychiatric facility and an outpatient mental health clinic.
My specific area of interest is mental health in minority populations. Minority mental health is of importance to me because minority populations are at higher risk for developing mental illness. Also, minority populations stigmatize mental health which is a barrier to adequate mental health treatment.
My goals for this Mental Health channel are as follows:
To change the stigma that surrounds mental health. To change the stigma of mental health in the black community. To bring awareness and educate around all things mental health and mental illness.
To destigmatize mental health in ethnic and cultural minorities, IE: African mental health and illness, East Asian Mental health and illness, Indian mental health and illness, Latino mental health and illness, Black mental health and illness, African mental health and illness.
To educate and bring awareness on topics like: Depression, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), Anxiety Disorders, Suicide, Bipolar Disorder, Mood disorders, Personality disorders, Therapy, Counseling, Drug and Alcohol Abuse and much more.
Whenever I talk about specific mental illness, most, if not all of my information comes straight from the DSM-5 and from the National Institute of Mental Health.
